Suspected Case of Mumps at North Union Elementary School

The district received notice today from the Union County Health Department regarding a suspected case of the Mumps in our school district.  A North Union Elementary student was recently diagnosed as having a case of the mumps.  There are two tests required to confirm a suspected case.  The first test was positive.  Unfortunately, the second test has a higher level of in accurate results.  As such, that secondary test was not performed.  The Union County Health Department is treating this suspected case as if it is a confirmed case.  As such, North Union staff members are following all Union County Health Department protocols and guidance regarding this suspected viral illness.  

See the link below for the notice from the Union County Health Department regarding the symptoms and exposure timeframe as well as the incubation period for when your child could potentially develop Mumps-like symptoms.  Elementary and Middle school students were sent home with a copy of this letter this afternoon.

After reading the notice that came home today, or having read it online, if you have any questions regarding Mumps or Mumps-like symptoms between now and April 26, please first contact your child’s pediatrician or the Union County Health Department at (937) 642-2053 and then please contact our school district nurse, Cheryl Skeins at 740-943-3113.
